I've just popped this little bugger out from behind my rear o/s light.


I believe this is what's coursing my crazy idling problem!

Is there anyway of checking or repairing this relay as they seem to be as rare as gens teeth?
Or has anyone got one lying around they are will to sell me?

Are you SURE it's the control module? I thought mine was. It turned out to be the throttle position switch not adjusted properly.

im not sure at all to be honest

at the moment, when you start it the revs jump straight up to 2500 to 3000 rpm and stay there!

the previous owner may of had a problem too as there is a clamp of some sort restricting the air to the isv, I've tightened this so to restrict the air more so its not revving its balls off, however this as cause a new problem. When its a cold start it now wont idle at all until its warm!!!

Start off with the TPS. It's on the underside of the throttlebody, and there's a little multiplug. Adjust it so that it clicks audibly RELIABLY when you open and close the throttle from idle, every time, no matter whether you release the throttle gently or snap it shut from full-open. Then, with a multimeter, make sure you can see it going open-close with the engine running, every time.

Take the idle valve off, and give it a good spray with carb cleaner inside. Half fill it, with your fingers over the ports to hold the carb cleaner in, and give it a really good shake. Repeat. Take any restrictions off the hoses, and make sure they're air-tight.

Once that's done, if you turn the ignition on but don't start the engine, you should hear and feel the idle valve buzz. Now start it up from cold, and see what the idle speed does with the valve connected and disconnected. Same hot. That'll show you if it's doing something. If it isn't, it might be the valve, it might be the module. I suspect the valve is probably a standard component across a range of similar era injected stuff.

cheers Adrian, I will have to try the TPS tomorrow now (my boss is understanding, but I don't want to push my luck )

as for the isv, I've already cleaned this and it does hum on the first ignition position. I've also ran it with and without it connected afterwards. it made no odds when it was connected (still revved like mad) and when disconnected and cold, it struggled to idle, but once warm was fine.

sounds like the valve is sticking, give it athorough clean with carb cleaner/brake cleaner

One other thing I've found is that I had an idle problem soon after we bought ours. Thanks to Keeno (who used to post on here a lot when he had Syncros) I traced it to the idle stabilisation unit which was full of water. Took it off, separated the casing and dried it with the bosses hair dryer. Put it back together with a bit of silicone and cable tied it up out of the way. Never had a problem since.

Tencent from the States who is another guru on water boxers thinks these ISUs are a waste of time and a bad design. I've not however found out what he does instead.

Well I did everything you guys said but the problem was still there!
So I put up with it until I could get some pennies together which meant after Christmas. I did some more reading on the problem and discovered that even if you think the idle stabilisation valve is working as per what the literature says, you still may have a faulty one. So I ordered a new one from brickwerks, it arrived on Friday, I fitted it yesterday and with a bit of tinkering hey presto! Bloody thing is working! No more left foot breaking or handbrake stopping haha

The only idle problem I had was when turning the wheel while stationary it would stall.. If you put just a little pressure on the steering wheel you can hear the idle pic up a tad !!
