So my van hasn't got a cigarette lighter, any advice on where to put one and how to wire it in?

I have a couple mounted below the rear seats for the kids to plug in their gadgets. Mine run from the leisure battery. Put an inline fuse in and connect up to the power.
One by the steering wheel for sat nav.

Depends what you want it for. If you want it to actually light cigarettes you will need a 'proper' complete one with the dash socket, lighter plug and illumination lamp designed to take the heavy current required; the VW fitted ones are fed by fuse 3 along with the radio, clock and coutesy lights and fused at 15A. Mounted in the dash.

The cheap and cheerful ones sold as just the socket or multiple sockets are usually designed for low current applications like sat navs, TV's etc

Yeah just to charge phone and sat nav really.

Do they sell DIY kits anywhere or can u recommend one to buy?

I bought some from Road Pro. Very good quality and German made.
Fitted one under the rock n roll bed and wired to the leisure battery.
Works well.

They're fairly bog standard. I don't think they do 'kits' as such because there is only two connections although you will need to either fuse it or splice it into a circuit that is already fused.

Motor factors like Elliots and Halfords probably off the shelf or ebay, amazon etc

Mount a proper cigarette lighter socket (metal bodied) on the dash facia (somewhere in the middle). With the dash being metal all the socket needs is a positive 'fused' feed as the dash itself acts as an earth...very easy and being a proper socket can take higher amperage 'if needed' at the same time it's mounted where it needs to be for the SatNav.

Hello stucox14, I have customized combination twice and still not working so have taken to my Little shop these days for them to type as still under guarantee. I am having problems finding an adaptor that meets the smoke free large I have three but nine fit? Can anyone let me know which type of adaptor will fit the smoke free large or provide me a weblink to where I can buy one?

And avoid those tiny cheap adapters that give you a USB socket from a standard ciggy socket. They're only a few milliamp at most and usually burn out quickly. Wilco however, do a very good one but its about £4 I think - its at least an amp - more useful.

I bought a " Durite " 20amp socket and took a live from the rear of the fuse box which was free. Easy fitted.

Don't do what I did. Went to the local scrappie and asked if I could dig one out of a vehicle, no problem. Got one out and thought I'd take it to the office just to show willing and they asked me a fiver for it! I said I wouldn't charge them a dismantling fee and they could put it on the parts shelf. Got a brand new one from local car spares for a bit over £4.
