by mods i mean no bell housing.fly wheel ,reshaping structures to fit .

well a bellhousing is hardly the end of the world!!! A sump and a bit of plumbing and a nice reliable golf 1.8. Personally I like the sound of the waterboxer.

easiest is the 1.8 GTi (pb) engine or the 2.0 8v GTi engine (AGG,ADY, 2E) and variants..
can be done in a weekend if starting from a diesel.

in that case stick with stock and find a garage that knows these engines is the easiest
but given the Irish prefer tractor engines that may not be so easy as you have found

Hmmm, I think this is just what I'm after. I've a 1.6d (CS), and I'd be keen to swap it out for the 2.0 GTi AGG. I've found a low mileage jobby on eBay. There's no way I'm touring Europe with the CS (it's in my garden, gutted running '83 tin top).
Are there any destructions anywhere on what extras and odds n bobs if be needing? Would the bog standard 4 speed box be okay, and are there any advantages to changing it for a 5? I've heard rumour that the top gear is a similar gearing on both anyway? Anything particularly I should be aware of?
I've got oil in the coolant anyway, so I've joined the pipes at the cooler, and am just about to fire her up. Odds are she'll need a rebuild anyway. So planning would make sense.
Mark.
