Hi, been an owner of a 2.0 AUTO water-cooled t25 for around a month now, done a few things to aid back to health since a bit of neglect from the previous owner. Full service, new accelerator cable (and pedal!), brakes pads and discs, etc.

I was hoping after tweaking the REALLY stiff throttle pedal that the performance might go up a bit...but sadly not. Just wondering if its normal to be struggling to hit 50mph? Would never get over that. Acceleration is really poor too I have to pick BIGGGG gaps at junctions and roundabouts or I'll be getting T boned.

I realise this is not a powerful car and Im not looking for speed...but some would be nice! It is an AUTO so I know some acceleration will go but top speed surely can't be tough to hit 50?

It does have a fairly strong smell of petrol when just ticking over, had some advice on here people saying it might be running rich (not sure how to tell or how to solve)

Also had some suggestions of tuning the carb...no idea how to do that mind.

Any advice or pointers on how to get that top speed to at least 60mph hopefully would be great!

OH! AND it doesn't have any kitchen gear in the back no sinks fridges stoves nothing just a rock and roll bed so can't be the weight of that stuff.

check that the autochoke opens fully after 6-8 mins.
make sure the timing advances with increasing rpm

get the engine compression tested. I beleive this will tell you if the engine is on the way, poorly, tired...or ok.

If you compression readings are ok - post them up on here for advice - then you can start looking at carb and timing settings etc etc...but its a bit futile doing those tweaks if the engine has poor compression.

Can do it yourself with a compression guage - or drop into a garage....doesn't take long.

Chaps will want to know whether it was a wet (with oil) or dry (no oil) reading....so ask the garage when they give you the results.

When I had my Aircooled, the a really good compression was 150 somethings , average 100 and anything below about 80 was pretty damn dire!!

Not sure if its the same for watercooled....get a haynes!!

Oh - enjoy the van, and you are in the right place for advice. Van should be alot nippier than 45mph...
