First post on here as a new member having just purchased a 1986 Club Joker in need of some TLC. First problem is the rear interior. There is a removable raised board covering the engine bay on which the mattress sits. This has been previously damaged and currently rests on two wooden off-cuts to prevent it from tipping in the corner where it buts up to the cupboard. I would like to repair/restore this and remove the pieces of old wood but not sure what it should look like. Can anyone help please (photos would obviously be a great help).

There isnt normally any raised section over the engine bay on a westfalia? Do you have a aftermarket bed fitted? Also Previous owner could have fitted bed hinges from a bay window westfalia, that raises the bed a fair bit.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just got her so I don't have any pictures yet. Ill see what I can do in the dark but failing that ill get some in the daylight tomorrow.

Yes I don't mind doing that to make her usable but wanted to check here first as I don't want to stray too far from the original westfalia interior which, aside from this bit at the rear, is in pretty good shape. Too dark for decent pictures so ill post them tomorrow. Thanks for your time.

The issue I have found is they do not wear aswell as some of the other westy seat coverings. We use ours loads so I have noticed some wear over the last couple of years. It was mint when I got it. I had a quote for over covers - £800 plus 11m2 of material!

as if by magic....

the bit over the engine bay is very homemade.. But seat/bed cushions look original, at a guess i'd say previous owner has swapped the T25 bed hinges for T2 hinges as this makes the bed higher. Maybe a couple of pics of the area under the seat might help. You could just remake the raised section and enjoy the extra storage.

I am happy with the amount of storage underneath so I am not overly concerned if it is a later addition/swap. I just did not want to stray from what it retained of its original conversion. I'll crack on therefore and make a replacement for the rear box. Thanks for the tips for the pics that's been a great help and i'm sure will come in handy in the future as I tackle more elaborate projects on her.

No idea if this would fit your van and in my opinion it is expensive but thought this might be off interest to you if you don't want to make your own or just as an idea of another way of doing it:

Unless you really need that storage between lid & mattress, I think I'd be trying to lower the main bed back to normal.

I don't think I could live with having to move the mattress every time I wanted to get in the rear cupboard, let alone empty the storage every time I wanted to get into the engine bay.

Thanks for the thought Dave but very expensive and not in keeping with the look of the club joker interior.

You are right Adrian it is a pain moving the mattress to open the rear cupboard but our main thought was to keep as much original as possible. I'll give it some thought whilst I deal with the more pressing issues and maybe get some inspiration at next years meets.

If originality is important to you, then that's another reason to go back to binning that storage box and going back to the lower hinges...
