1982 air cooled - heat exchanger question

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been queried before, I've done a search but couldn't get what I was looking for.

The heat exchangers on our 2ltr air cooled are disconnected at present, or appear to be... The elbows (up pipe bit) appear to be floated off the end of the heat exchanger and the control cables are all tied up. So what ever adjustment made on the dash = zero warm air.

My question is, and stick with me on this one....is there a way to connect the heat exchanger up with a modification that they constantly work? In essence is their away to plumb them on for winter and then disconnect them during summer? I've heard rumours that there is pipe installation that can do this?

Here is a couple of pics from underneath my van:

I am handy with a spanner but have zero knowledge of heat exchangers....willing to lean though :ok

The heat exchangers are the only thing that need sorting on the van to make drivable our winter, which I am really keen to do, otherwise it's bloomin' freezing.....

Cheers,
Dan

Fitted some new silicone ducting to the van on Wednesday before heading to the beach. The air temp was 6'c when I set out & over 60'c when I arrived 40 minutes later.

Brilliant.

I am yet to start attacking mine yet. Do you have any pics from underneath of yours, I'd be interested to see the ducting rigged up. :ok

I changed both of my heat exchangers last weekend. 2.0 cu.
The drivers side one was a pig to get off. The top nut and bolt that attaches to the silencer is very difficult to undo. I had to use 2 x 13mm ring spanners and had to keep swapping them over every twist as you can not turn it very much due to the access. I do have an empi exhaust fitted so I'm not sure if it's the same on a standard exhaust.

Very happy with the end result. Lots of debris will come out of the vents if all works ok.
