Fitting a ladder to tailgate - advice please

Hi guys,
hopefully fitting a stainless stell ladder to the tailgate of our syncro this weekend. Any advice on fittings, strengthening, do / don't do?
Any advice gratefully received as cutting and drilling our lovely little truck is somewhat nerve wracking and I want to get it right first time.

Mine is just bolted at the bottom, with some big spreaders on the inside. The top is a bit more tricky, and I ended up using large pop rivets, again with washers, which seems to work okay. Big hint - make sure it looks straight! Mine looked fine when it was done, but now, every time I look at it, it appears out of kilter.

If its not straight, it would drive my OCD mad!

Anyone got any pictures of theirs please? I want to see how they're mounted through the tailgate.

I just used big rivets with a blob of sealant in each hole on my old Syncro. No extra spreader plates or anything.

And you could climb it safely? Or was it mainly for show and carrying stuff?

How very dare you!
Yes, it was fine for climbing including a jerry can of water. It was quite a wide ladder.
