Difference between 2wd & syncro thermostats? 2.1DJ

Hey, what is the actual difference between a regular 2wd & syncro thermostat on a 2.1DJ?
Are they inter-changeable if you just turn the top 90*? Is it just the sensors that are different?

I fitted a syncro thermostat housing to my 2wd.
I had to turn the top

no issues to report
