Open threaded hole in housing below right starter motor!!

To my amazement i have found an open threaded hole (approx. 28mm dia) in the housing just below right of the starter motor. I can see a large toothed gear through the hole
Anyone know what i am missing and where i can get a replacement?
Would any damage have been caused?
Any help in solving this puzzle would be appreciated.
Cheers Pat

relax
it's supposed to be there
what you can see is the flywheel
there's usually a dust cap over it..but it
doesn't really matter

Thanks Kev, that's put my mind at ease
Looking at the toothed gear aka flywheel, should there be any sign of oil/lube on it? couldn't see any.

no
do you know what the flywheel does and what the teeth are for?

I know the name but never had a need to work on it. A quick search tells me it helps to balance the momentum of the engine and for the starter motor to engage to.
Does it do anything else on our vans? Thx for your help kev

Thanks for the enlightenment, i hope my knowledge gets to a level where i can post a smart reply

It is there for locking the flywheel with a special tool to allow undoing and torquing of the crankshaft bolt that holds the cooling fan hub or pulley.

And tightening up the flywheel/auto flexy plate bolts
