I am planning on removing my engine next week and need to know what clearance I need to allow me to drop it out. Basically I want to make sure I have the back end high enough to allow me to drop the engine out. I don't fancy getting half way through and then realising I don't have enough clearance

Im sure this has probably been asked on numerous occasions but have searched the wiki and cant find the answer anywhere.

I've never measured it - about 5 knotches on the 6 tonne axle stands for a syncro at the rear cross member and it depends on the size of wheels on your dolly etc...or the thickness of your carpet or cardboard or whatever

I used a friends ramps under rear wheels so cant be sure but think they were about 10 inches - 250mm.
And the engine was on a crappy Hal***ds 2t trolley jack! Had partner helping to balance while I did jacking and sliding off the gearbox shaft.
There is a way to put 75mm blocks of wood between the rear wheel carriers and shafts to support the gearbox. Try not to 'hang' the engine on the gearbox shaft or vice versa, they need to come apart straight.
You can always cheat and remove inlet stuff and/or carefully slide it off the jack when its down at the lowest (if thats how you do it) and pull out by hand. They aren't that heavy.

Once on the deck, you can always jack one corner of the vehicle to give you enough clearance to drag it out - I've always tended to do it that way. Saves measuring.

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like a standard pair of ramps and a skateboard will do

Weather permitting im hoping to finish removing the engine tomorrow, wish me luck!
