since I am unable to get a proper fuel pump, I have to use the ones with a 6mm out let pipe, and a 7mm supply.
my 1983 1.9 dg is plumbed in for a 6mm supply, no way I can get around it.
needless to say, forcing a 6mm pipe onto a 7mm tube is far from ideal. dangerous in fact.
I have had this pipe split ,letting fuel pour over the engine.

anyone got any ideas on how to fix the problem?

I shall be grateful for any suggestions.

VW fitted a larger bore flexible hose that fits over the fuel line as it approaches the pump.
secured with clips
over time yours has probably lost it

Are you sure about those dimensions? The fuel pump on my DG has an 8mm inlet and a 6mm outlet. Whatever - I also needed to adapt from the 6mm outlet on the carb to the 8mm pipework attached to the return on the fuel tank, and after deciding, like you, that stretching the 5.6mm ID pipe over the 8mm spigot was a bad idea I bought one of these

That's the way to do it but only use the metal ones, don't buy the plastic ones they have a tendency to break.

you are quite right, it is an 8mm inlet.an unforgivable error on my part.

there will be one winging its way to me tomorrow.

the pump that has just failed has 6mm pipes on both inlet and outlet.
no longer available, so I`m told.

my problem is solved thanks to you all, and I very much appreciate your input
