Hi everyone.

Just bought a 2L Aircooled T25. Going to change the oil and filter, also the gearbox oil.
Is it worth changing the ht leads as part of the service? The engine seems to be running fine, would it just be a waste of money?

I've read a few posts recommending changing them on an unfamiliar vehicle.

I don't change my ht leads as part of a service. I don't know if its good practice to though. I do however keep a spare set, spare dizzy, rotor arm and plugs in the van just in case.
ps if your changing the gearbox oil, make sure you can undo the filler plug before you drain the oil.

Cheers, carrying a spare set of leads etc., not a bad idea - I'll do that myself. Does the gearbox drain plug need a new copper washer?

The leads in my van have been in it for 3 years, previously they were in a Fiat X19 for 4 or 5 years. They were the best I could afford at the time and I was buggered if I was going to scrap them when the Fiat finally bio-degraded. A set of good quality silicone, carbon cored leads can last for years. As previously mentioned, if you do splash out on new leads keep the old ones as a spare set.

Do the stuff that actually needs doing...for example:

Oil & Filter plus sump bung washer
Air filter
Petrol filter
Spark plugs
Gearbox oil
Brake fluid change
Check and adjust front discs and pads/rear shoes and cylinders
Tyres
And then there are all the other checks to: lights/steering/suspension/brakes etc

Just popped in to say gearbox oil goes in a lot easier if you warm it in a bowl of hot water first. Oh, and I do it with a length of hose fed up into the engine bay and a funnel. Better than lying on your back under the van trying to keep the plastic spout in the hole

Warm the container the oil is in. Don't pour the oil in the hot water. Obvious I know, but you can never be too sure.

Cheers chaps. Changed the gearbox oil today. Fairly straight forward, filler and drain plugs were a tad tight but gave way with a bit of brute force!

The long filler hoses built into the 1L bottles made filling a doddle!

Also for those that need to know, my 4 speed box (2L Aircooled) took 3.5litres.
