steering noises

A slight click has become a pronounced cluck on steering over the last few months when changing direction, more pronounced on heavy steering. It's got pas and I'm dreading the cost implications to the point of putting off removing the steering cowl/cover to take a look. Time to bend over and take 6 of the best? Please give me some cheap things to check!
