Steering Column - Help!

I think I made a boo boo!
I just went to change my massive bus wheel for a Mk2 Golf GTI one, all was going swimmingly until the new one seemed to stand off a bit. So out with the palm of my hand and I gave it a slap - the whole thing dropped down - sweet I thought... Now I knew I would need to do the switch gear mod so was bemused when the indicator cancel worked. I whipped off the Gti wheel and popped the bus one back on and this is where I found I had knocked the column down as when fully on the splines only half engaged.
I pulled off the cowling and saw that the column is not straight through in one piece (I'm new to the bus scene) and is joined. Anyway I gave the column a tap with a Brummie screwdriver and it all popped back to position. Everything is back on, the GTI wheel is bolted up tight and it doesn't self cancel now so I think everything is back in the right position so my question is - Have I buggered it?
Cheers for any advice!
