Hi all,

I'm in the lucky position of having a new garage built (Lucky but a lot poorer). I would like to make sure I can get the van in and also hopefully future proof myself.

I've got to stick with pop tops as my mothers road has a height barrier. Currently I have a Devon moonraker and the listed height is just over 2.2 metres.

What sort of heights are the other common pop tops? Viking, trooper, Kamper, villa etc? I've done web searches to try and find details but cannot find any reference to these heights. I want to make sure the door is high enough without being huge. (Probably a roller).

Any advice would be welcomed. I was thinking of getting a 2.3m high door which is 7' 6". Would that cope with most pop tops.

Am also curious as to what a T4, T5 pop top height is just incase my lottery numbers come up!

I did a rough measurement on my Viking (which is on standard height springs) and measured somewhere around 2.2m. It wasn't a very accurate measurement though - I stopped trying when I realised it was taller than my garage door. I'll try and get a better measurement this weekend if you like.

why cant you open the barrier if you live there? what if you need a works van in ??

I can get our 1982 Moonraker in a 7ft door (a section roll door that rolls out flat in the roof space) but it only leaves a few inches gap that without a roof vent, so I can't add a normal roof vent unless I lower the suspension from standard height.

I could but it would mean stopping on a busy road, getting out, unfastening the padlock, opening the barrier, driving into my mothers road, locking it back up again every time I visit my mother in the van (a couple of times a week). And then repeating the process when I leave. Much simpler just to drive in.

I would like a garage where I could get the van in if I need to do work. I am getting a bit long in the tooth for lying under a rusty vehicle in the cold and rain.

I probably didn't explain my origianl message well.... At 52 I don't still live with my mum! Just visit a couple of times a week...

At 52 its taken me long enough to afford a new garage. (Don't tell the wife - She thinks she's getting a new kitchen)

My Atlantic need 7ft 2ins clearance, but, if I could afford a garage, I would probably go for a height which allows the roof to be up for cleaning/ventilation/guest sleeping. If only......
