Hello all,

After having my van for a few weeks I've discovered an oil leak. I've taken a couple of bad phone photos here:

Please could someone speculate on the location and/or offer some more info?


I think my van is a 1.9 DG engine

Im only starting to learn about engines, so any source of information available on the net would be useful. Are there any good diagrams for novies that show what part is what?

The classic place to leak is where the black crankcase breather tower mounts to the crankcase and where the hose from the tower goes onto the carb beret.

What carb is that? Its not standard for a dg could it be a df?

Oil on the top is usually breather tower as said
Fuel pump and dizzy also leak a lot

Get yourself a haynes maual everybody moans about them but a goldmine of info for the money

I would also be EXTREMELY concerned about those fuel hoses and their missing clips

That was my first thought then I realised they are too low down for fuel pipes got to be vac hoses surely

New oring is needed for the crankcase breather tower as the old one will be hard

Yeah, at a quick glance I didn't notice the missing drip ring on the spigots ... yah just never no though.

Thanks for the assistance everyone , much appreciated. I've got a hayes manual coming soon - so hopefully that will educate me a lot.

The engine was rebuilt a few years ago , and the carb does look new along with fuel pump. I've not noticed any smells of petrol so Im hoping that its just oil leaking. I was thinking it was a DG engine from one of the numbers on the v5c. Here is a pic:

Looking at the pic a couple of days from taking it, I've noticed an electric cable near the fuel pump that needs sorting. Also does anyone know what the cable hanging loosely near the alternator is?

Early cooling system 1.9 with a retro fitted electric fuel pump and a late system air box. The engine case number is found on the base of the breather tower facing you as you view from behind the van, the reason I stressed the case part is that pretty much anything could have been rebuilt into that case over the past 30-odd years

One thing that is certain is that you need to lose the fuel filter in the inlet side fuel hose ... you know .. the one directly above the hot engine There should just be the one filter .. next to the tank outlet on the offside.

Hi Ian, thanks for having a look.

I will follow your recommendation and get rid of the petrol filter coming out of the fuel pump. It seems like a stupid place to have one.

I've got a feeling there is already a filter underneath the van (unless its something else that looks similar) - will have a proper look when I get home.

Assuming it is a filter , do I need to have two fuel filters? And does the location - relative to the fuel pump matter?

You should have a single filter ... as I said, a single inline filter just next to the outlet of the fuel tank.
