Input shaft bearing

HI,

I know I should have changed it when I rebuilt the engine  , but it was only a little play and I had a date with our first weekend away of the year. However, input shaft began to leak, I know I should have changed the seal at least when I had the gearbox out too  . Anyway just whipped the box out (new clutch is dry luckily) and the play has increased to around 5mm from side to side at the end of the shaft. Tried brickwerks for a new bearing but they are out of stock, does anyone know anouther stockist that sells decent quality bearings. Also can these bearings be a bugger to remove or am I likely to need a puller, yet to remove the bell housing so I dont no what too expect.

Cheers
Nic

Cheers itchy,

Good call, just not sure if it is what the problem is yet, tried vw heritage, they have some but although the part number is the same it states they are only for vehicles up to 83 and our is an 88 so I am a little baffled at the mo. Not really familiar with these gearboxes however after just removing the bell housing which made the input shaft seal removal a lot easier I was expecting to see a bearing inside the bell housing itself but nothing there, so I assume it is in the gearbox housing, before I start stripping it down any further I think I need some more info first. For instance is this movement on the shaft normal, on the plus side the diff looks in great shape.

the input shaft will wobble about as it is not tightly connected to the mainshaft, it is a splined collar joint and the double ended grub screw is only for linear location, the mainshaft is supported by the input bearing behind the splined sleeve and the input shaft is supported by the spigot bearing in the end of the crank
I have petrol spigot bearing in stock
the input bearing can only be changed when the box is stripped down
oil loss at the input seal may well be due to worn or damaged and dislocated oil thrower which is the rifled pressed steel collar protruding into the gearbox behind the input seal
if oil thrower is worn/damaged/loose then oil seal will not cope with the oil load and will weep
oil thrower runs like a 0.5mm clearance on the shaft, ie 0.25mm radial clearance, so as to resist the oil being drawn/pushed along the shaft

Hi Aidan

Thanks for the reply, the oil thrower looks sound visually, I will measure it tommorow for wear, pleased to see that the input shaft should have some play. The spigot bearing is also good as I replaced that when I changed the flywheel oil seal , I was more concerned by the amount of play in the input shaft after removal of the gearbox. However you have put my mind to rest on that one.

Cheers
Nic

Hi,

The clearance is spot on with Aidans description, gearbox is back in and drives fine, happy days again.

Cheers
