What is this part called and what are the possible causes of the oil leaking from it?

Well that's either leaking through the rocker box cover seal or rocker box cover itself (if it's rusted through). The seal costs a couple of quid. A new rock box cover costs more squid. If you lever that hefty tension bar off with a strong screw driver the cover just lifts off. Check the cover for damage. Replace the seal and cover (if it's rusted through) and lever the tension bar back on. Job done!
:ok

Thanks Ralph. I shall investigate further.

Checking Brickwerks the Air cooled gasket/seal is a couple of quid. The water cooled seal is a massive 72p. Bargain!

Is this something like a novice like me can do? Would be well pleased if its within my capabilities.

And if the problem is what you think it is – then is it these 2 items I potentially need?

Thanks

Yep those are the correct bits for a 2.1 water cooled engine. It's easy to do. You just need a strong screwdriver. You put it under the tension bar which is hinged and runs across the top of the rocker box cover. You then lever it upwards levering against the rocker box itself. The tension bar is a tight fit and needs some force to move it. I hope I have explained it well enough, but I am sure somebody else will fill in the gaps if I haven't. Sarran?

Nice to see that some parts cost so little. Makes a change. Buy two gaskets at least and then you have a spare. Good luck.
:ok

I use a thin smear of grease on the gasket to hold it in place in the cover when putting back on . :ok

Stupid question time. This is not an engine-out job is it? Just dont want to remove something I shouldn't.

And should I be prepared for much oil coming out if I remove the cover?

I bloody hope not
All easily doable with engine in , go for it
You will get a bit of oil, but not much at all.

Brill! Thanks for the advice. I will have a proper look to make sure that is where the leak is and if so order the parts.

Cheers

I forgot that bit. Well spotted. You need to do this to make sure the gasket stays stuck to the cover as you match the cover up with the rocker box.

On closer inspection I noticed petrol leaking from a pipe from one of the injectors. It was totally rotten. That was a close one!
