My horn switch works fine when disconnected from the steering wheel,

When I put it back in the boss it still feels OK but just doesn't sound the horn :?:

Any ideas?

I think you are going to have to re-write that a bit to make it clearer ;) As it reads, the horn switch "works" when "disconnected" Though I guess you mean you have tested it with a multimeter whilst off the vehicle ? If it shows correct operation off the vehicle, with a meter, then the causes of "no horn" could be numerous.

Give us a bit more info.

Like, if you manually earth the wire in the centre of the steering wheel, the one to the horn switch (this is how it works) does the horn sound ?

Sorry,

The horn unit works.
The wiring is continuous.
If I take the horn switch out of the steering wheel and press it, the horn works.
I put the switch back into the steering wheel and whilst you can still push it, it doesn't sound, suggests to me that when in situ it is not making a good contact.

What do you think?

Took it apart again and ran the wires round the boss a differnt way and it's working fine. I think they must have been putting pressure on the swicth and deforming it slightly.

Mine did that - I found that I had knocked the earth wire off whilst putting the trim back on! It was very loose when put back on so gave the spade a squeeze with pliers. No trouble since.
