Might be cheaper to get it done by a tuning company if there's one local to you Dave - i just had my timing/mixture sorted for £20.00.

If you are in it for the long term then you are right to buy a light you can then check it periodically
You can pick up 12v from the alternator and clip the neg on the body

Try your local freecycle group. I got my Snap On one that way.

Not a bad price that. Does that include a calibration certificate?

I connect my timing light to the battery using jump leads works perfectly ok.

Hello,

A timing light...... :)

I've had several..

The important part is the ferrite induction coil .. the thing you clip to nr 1 lead..

Thats what you pay for.... don’t drop it..

To make life easy,, God invented the Tippex (or similar) marker.. :)

Clean with a file and highlight the notch(es) on the pulley..

Mark accurately the timing you need ...eg 8 degrees before top dead centre.. on the crankcase... and also at least 20 degrees of advance..

To do the test.. follow the book.. or watch the video..idle stabiliser on/off..vacuum tubes blanked off..

If you have marked well the timing points, then you will see when every thing is lined up..

never mind the 'misfire' flashes..

Make sure that the induction holder fits well around the lead.. not being 'bothered' by the other leads..

I use an over-length lead for nr 1...

Induction holder close to the dizzy..

Use a separate battery for the strobe lamp..

Happy tuning... :)

Cordialement,

:ok
