GEARS - Shift Rod Wear

Hi, Any help with this would be really appreciated.

My 1985 1.6D 4 speed gearbox van has major gear problems and gave up on me the night before my 2nd MOT test of the month. I fitted a new gearshift selector leaver (with the ball joint) about a year ago when I had similar problems. I fitted it myself and all worked fine. I remember being a bit concerned about the amount of wear on the shift rod but was unable to source a new one. Anyway this wear has come back to haunt me and the selector leaver seams to be moving around the teeth of the rod without changing gear, then getting stuck in 1st and when knocking out of 1st the gearshift selector leaver just comes out of the joint altogether leaving me unable to change gear. The seal around the shift rod also looks to be gone.

Any Ideas! Should I just try a new gearshift selector and replace the seal or go the whole hog and replace the shift rod also. If anyone knows where to get one that would be useful. Having searched the forum I seen someone suggested welding the rod and filing down but I can't see how that could be done around the teeth!

This image is not my shift rod so dose not represent the wear. Mine is the same type.
