1.6TD smokey under acceleration

The smoke is black and only present during acceleration or load such as hill climbs and on down shift gear changes.

I'm guessing over fuelling or blocker breathers?

What are your thoughts? Where do I begin? This is our first T25.

I'll check the air filter tomorrow, what else can I try?

I have the same symptoms and I can only tell you what the problem is in my case, knackered turbo oil seals. The turbo's oil is going into the exhaust pipe and inlet manifold, burnt and semi burnt oil is coming out the exhaust under acceleration. Check your own situation first before deciding your turbo is knackered too.

Can the oil seals be replaced on their own?

How do I test it? The smoke is black not blue and the acceleration seems reasonable and it cruises at a fair 70 mph. The smoke isn't constant, only under acceleration.

Black smoke is normal under load (climbing, accelerating,...) for older diesel engines.
How much smoke is there, i.e. can you still see vehicles behind you?

I'd start by just fitting new fuel and air filter. It's an old engine though, so will give out the odd puff under acceleration.

That sounds perfectly normal 1,6TD behaviour, as Lloydy stated - change the filters.
These motors are known to be dirty breathers.
You cannot take a 1,6TD into most German cities which is why I had mine converted to a 2.0i Petrol engine.

70mph is pretty fast for a syncro on standard wheels and gearing. I would imagine your JX is reving very hard.

Blimey -didn't realise that. Is that for all older diesels or are there foreign visitor exemptions?

Cheers

It also applies to tourists.

If your turbo has gone you would get quite a blast of smoke as oil from the engine gets consumed, but as said its quite normal for some black smoke, its a diesel after all.

Obviously if in doubt check and if the turbo goes properly it can be quite catastophic, the engine can run off on its own engine oil, be hard to stop and will run until such time as the oil is gone and it goes bang.

I think mines just a little old and smoky by the sounds of it.
