Hi, Carla and me have decided to do a tour of Scottland from the 4th to 11th of October. Probably going up the east coast and back down from the west. I do not have an itinerary yet but i will share it as soon as i know. I'm trying to gather a few phone number / contact up there, in case of emergy/ break down / end of the world type scenario

. so if any of you want to catch up for a beer or two on the bank of a lake somewhere , no problem, and if we can share phone number in PM in case we need "un pied a terre" it would be totally awesome thank you.

You'll have a lovely trip, I recommend the West Highlands of Scotland by W. H. Murray. I have a spare paperback copy you can borrow, I'll bring next weekend if you like. I'd also recommend only planning an outline itinerary and being flexible. Avoid setting fixed nightly stopping points so you can slow down, or just stop, its the best way to enjoy the place.

We once toured Scotland in January for a couple of weeks when Isaac was 18 months old. It was really good because that time of year you hardly saw anyone out side the towns and cities. One of the Highlights was getting the ferry over to Mull, loads of nice wild camping spots and at Calgary Bay there is an actual area set aside for wild/free camping with a pure white sandy beach with crystal clear water. We had a 2wd camper back then and during that trip we realized we needed a Syncro due to the constant threat of deep snow being dumped overnight and roads being closed. The ferry was quite expensive but as you can camp for free and off set that against the ferry cost it is worth it.
I can show you were we wild camped if you like, loads of fishing places

Fabzzz - we did just that this time last year but up the west, across the top, down the east...in 16 days. With only a week....you'll be on the move pretty much all the time!
The west was just spectacular. We drove down the mull of Kintyre - single track road with some fantastic drops. The Isle of Skye was gorgeous - will spend more than 2 days there next time. Derry over. Bridge off. Would also like to return to the islands.
If we were doing it again, I woud stay on the west side for the entire time....the top and east was barren by comparison.
What we didn't find was alot of off-road (ok, I was in the 2wd so wanted tarmac anyway, but our travelling companions wouldn't have minded a bit of mud!!). Even the single track coast road with its fantastic views and hill climbs was still exceptionally well paved! Plenty of sleepy stops - many beaches had signs not to camp....but it was september...and it was only us two vans there....and we left it as spotless as we found it, of course!! We also camped n large laybys by lochs, etc etc. We kind of worked it so we havd 2 nights wildcamping...then found a site for a shower! Didn't stick to the itinery - had a longer break in Ullapool (campsite about 3 miles out next to a loch was heaven)
Enjoy your trip - Carla will have plenly of material to point her camera at!!
