hi all when i check timeing on 1600ct halls ignition with corect conectors joined vacum pipes conected ect
the timing mark dances from corect alignment 5 deg ATDC to approx 4/5 deg retarded at 850/900 rpm ??
is this my cheap timing light or does this indicate worn distributor or other ignition parts please help thank you

If you pull the vac tube off does the timing mark settle at 5' BTDC? If it does that would prove the timing light is ok. It would also point towards the vac signal being erratic because the throttle flap isn't set properly maybe?
With the vac tube connected does the timing mark stop dancing further up the rev range?

yes m8 timeing mark moves and is steady when you give revs i am in process of elemination i have rebult carb and set flaps to correct gaps ect
found and fixed air leaks on intake manafold may stiil have air leak on brake servo hose /valve just waiting for parts fitted new plugs /ht leads dist cap rotor arm and checked by runing engine and earthing each plug lead out all seams ok also have tuned carb best i could using a gunson gas meter have got co2 down to 0.3% the fault is lack of power on road test the van is new to me 4 months and had engine problems when i bought her also the correct timeing is 4/6 deg after TDC on halls ignition i think you will note

I wasn't querying the timing point you were using? If your dizzie is dual vac, with both vac tubes disconnected the timing should be around 4-6' BTDC. When you connect the vac retard tube, it will pull the dizzie mechanism to give you your 4-6' ATDC timing. You could check if your fluctuating timing mark is a vac issue by connecting a tube to the vac can and sucking on it with the engine running. You sucking the tube will give you a constant vacuum and should pull the timing mark to 4-6' ATDC.

ok up date on my timing
engine running 4 deg ATDC remove vacum pipe timing advances 5 deg suck on pipe back to 4 deg ATDC so it would seam all is correctly working on dizy
but have noticed if i quickly give revs the timing mark goes retarded to 12 deg ATDC for a split second then drops to retarded when revs catch up
would you say this is normal for that ignition system ????

I'm a bit confused? If the timing mark moves anti-clock wise from TDC the ignition is being advanced. If it moves clockwise from TDC it is being retarded. So when you remove the vac pipe does the timing mark move to 5' BTDC, because that would be advancing. That's what it should be doing.
Does your dizzie have dual vacuum advance / retard or just single advance? I think CT engines came with both types of dizzie.
if i quickly give revs the timing mark goes avanced to 12 deg ATDC for a split second then drops to retarded
If you mean that the timing mark goes clockwise (more retarded) when you blip the throttle it sounds like the vac lines are on the wrong way around (if you've got a dual vac dizzie).

thanks sarran i watched this few weeks ago when you sent me the link and after more testing of my ignition today & a very worn distributer i have dicided to go with your retro replacment
i have ordered an SVDA distributer as you explain and a better quality set of points total cost £35

i have removed all the voodo not working electronic ignition idel stabiliser & ignition amplifier and wireing harness. fingers crossed be back on the road soon
thanks for utube videos realy good.

when is part 2 of the retro fit

yep two vacum pipes on dzzy sorry my mistake timing advances as it should but when i blip throttle timing mark retards to 12 deg just for a split second then advances when revs catch up
took dizzy of & and have too much play anticlockwise & up and down its real worn out . thank for your help boxy

fixed thank you sarran & the great videos utube & others that gave advice i whent for the retro back to old school contact points and new distributer
a single vacuum dual advance (SVDA ) ditributer at a cost £33 a beter quality set of points £5 all from a well known internet site E **Y
old distributer hall ignition no longer avalible so removed idle stabilizer voodoo and the voodoo ignition control unit that was giveing so much problems
lined up tdc no 1 fireing fitted new dizzy re routed vacuum advance plumbing on carb and bingo shes run a bit dogey at first the i changed timeing to 8deg btdc and shes fixed no more voodoo ignition for me

rebuild brakes next

Hello,
I'm glad you are pleased with the result...
Tick over ok...
No drive through 'flat spot'..
I'm sorry not to have had time to photo the carb plumbing.. but I imagine you have blocked off the three way pipe to two...
Let it all bed in.. then we can fine tune....
What is your MPG on a run...
