Fuel pump relay problem

Hoping someone can help with this as we've now had to have our van recovered twice with the same problem! In the summer we were in northern Scotland when we started having problems starting the van.Ignition lights came on but only a short buzz from the back and no firing. Sometimes it would be OK for a while and then pack up again. When I looked in the engine compartment it was obvious that if I played around with the wires round the coil and relay box while wife turned key then that helped. Finally we were on the way home when the engine started to lose power and cut out and we couldn't get her going again(van not wife). The oil pressure light is flashing also although oil is OK. Fuel pump and coil have both been don recently so we've asked an auto electrician to come on Monday so I thought if anyone could offer a few pointers it might help him sort it quicker. I've been through the archive and printed off some similar topics as well.
The van is a 1991 petrol 2.1 transporter called Maysie.
