Hi all,

Our new (to us) 1.6 diesel is great, the only problem we've found so far, apart from the wiring and the brakes is a hesitation during acceleration.

It starts straight away every time and drives off well, it hesitates at about 1/3 pedal for a few seconds then goes. It seems to happen in all gears.

Not very good with diesels yet so all help appreciated..

Could be any number of things.
Start with the easy to check ones.
HT leads, timing etc.
After that, I am not sure where you exactly go with diesel checks, glow plugs and fuel delivery system etc.
Never having owned a diesel VW.
I did have an HT lead that broke down at certain revs on a petrol, this caused symptoms like you describe.
So, I would just grab a spare HT lead and try it in turn to see if it makes a difference to start with.

HT lead on a Diesel?

Look at your engine whilst someone presses the accelerator. Does the throttle lever move as soon as pedal is pressed or is there slack in the cable that only starts to move the throttle lever once the pedal has been pushed down ⅓?

when was it last serviced? new filters, fuel, oil, air and fresh oil is where to start.

Cheers guys, Just charged all the filters and the throttle has full movement and revs all the way. It only happens whilst driving.

Struggling to see how fresh oil can contribute to an engine hesitating ?

HT lead on a diesel ......... Well, I did say I never ran a diesel.
Thought there must be something similar to an HT lead to the glow plugs.
My mistake.

right this is against my better judgement after previous posts being exchanged between us, but ill give it another go, diesel engines need to be serviced and an un-serviced diesel will miss behave just like the op stated, crap in the fuel filter, crap in the oil filter and crap in the air filter all contribute, also FRESH OIL contributes to much better running engine, as it cleans and lubricates it thickens and becomes treacle like. the leads to glow plugs are nothing like ht leads and glow plugs are nothing like spark plugs. not all diesel engines have glow plus. diesel engines work by compressing the air fuel mixture until it explodes. all this is available via a google search. maybe a bit of research will help you, before you offer advice or question advice given.

when did it last have the timing belt and tensioner changed?

Not sure about that Mark, as the top cam cover is missing I can see that the cambelt looks ok. The waterpump and alternator belt looked cracked so going to change them next weekend.

I changed the accelerator cable yesterday and its a lot more responsive but still has a dead spot at low revs in all gears. Think ill find a diesel mechanic and get him to check the timing.

whilst doing the cables yesterday it did sound a bit "knocky" from the engine furthest from the rear.

Not that confident with watercooled at the mo Mark
