How to fix the sliding window lock? Any help please.

Our Sliding window lock has decided to give up the ability to lock. I have looked on the web and can not find any replacement kits. The problem could be that the spring has just died after 31 years of use, but the screw in the black handle seems to just turn round and round, ie it has died as well.

My question has anybody else had this sort of trouble and how did you fix it. My idea is to drill a small hole in the metal window slider and use a self tapper screw for security, un-screw for air.

Any better ideas?

Cheers

Are you sure that it is a screw? It may be a roll pin. I confess that I haven't looked close though.
I use a pop rivet in a hole on mine as mine would still open 1/2 inch or more due to wear of the track.

My sliders were added as it was origionally a panel van, no locks just a flimsy piece of plastic which you lift to open them.

I use a strip of metal cut to the right length in the inside channel so the window can not be moved, it's crude but it works :D

I also have vents, when these are in I have a shorter strip of metal, you can see this in the pic on the link in my sig below
