Slight judder when cruising. And she stalls when I stop

Just got back from Dorset .
On way up on A35 al hills and bends she was cruising beautifully, 65 on the flat. Then we hit a long very slow traffic jam of about 5 miles, she coped with the 5mpoh mile crawl in First getting up to second, then when the traffic cleared and we started accelerating again she was like a diferent vehicle. Ther was a slight judder as I drove, seeme to level off a bit once we were properly cruising again.
I stoppe at Maccy D at Dorchester. I checkei oil, topped it up slightly and had a rest for 30 mins. Then drove on to Poole she seemed fine again.

Just driven back and she she is OK when the foot is on the accelerator but if not keeping at certain revs she seems to have a slight judder again. Also even worse when I decreased speed and slowed for roundabouts she stalled every time and no its not my clutch control.

Irony is she went up Haldon Hil at 40mph by time she was at top and is happiest when Im driving over 50.I kept thinking I was going to have to stop but then she started purring again.

Shes a 1983, 2 litre Aircooled. Can anyone advise what the issue/s may be

any popping or backfiring?
I would suspect a couple of things.
a blocked jet or an air leak
at higher rpm this misfire would would hardly be noticed
at lower rpm it would stall an engine

Or crap in your fuel filter restricting the flow perhaps?

I did replace the air hoses into the air filter before I went so I did wonder if Id made a boo boo somewhere.

Occasional burp but no back firing more like a hiccup if you understand me.

Also as I was doing a long run I had filled the fuel tank right up

Although I must admit it feels more like a fuel thing.

Now going to go to Wiki to look up blocked jets and fuel filter.

Thanks Kevtherev

The fuel filter is in the fuel line just after the outlet of the petrol tank on the driver's side. It costs a couple of quid from any auto factors and takes a minute to change. If your van has still go the original twin Solex carbs you won't have any other fuel filters.

You could also check each end of the metal pipe that runs across the bulkhead in the engine bay. Where it joins the left hand carb there's a rubber tee, and behind the right hand carb is a rubber elbow. If either of these are leaking or disconnected the engine will stall at idle.

Ill be looking at al this on Saturday. If I get stuck picture may well follow.

Thank you so much everyone and Boxy thanks for putting it into language I can understand lol

What makes it more of a problem is the fact that the guy who has been doing my welding has accidently taken my Haymes manual home with him and hes now away for 4 months.

Ok got my haynes manual. Spent afternon wit step dad who has lymphatic leukemia checking al air hoes. We cahnged a loose hose from manifold.

Checked spark plugs.

He got tired then aso we didnt do anymore but I v v grateful for his help.

Did notice that the right hand spark plug is v close to the accelerator cable and Im wondering if the vibration from that can be affecting her. I was tempted to try and put a tie on that to try and pul it way from accelerator cable.

Tony liberally spraye everything with WD 40 I now hate the smell

I took her up on the moors for afternoon cuppa an walk the dog. She is no better igf not worse for stalling!!

I did look at Wiki and I wondring should I be looking at the non vanagon poer fault, electrics I havent gota clue.

We had the misfortune of random stalling combined with a knackard starter motor

After much fault finding, the stalling was down to an air leak from the left hand manifold vacuum hose.. Along with the vacuum system being plugged in back to front on the carb, and an extra air leak caused by a vacuum hose actually missing too!

And... The timing was wrong, and the fuel mixture was wrong, and the idle screw was set badly to compensate for EVERYTHING basically being "tuned" by previous owners who didn't have a clue.

I would guess you've got an air leak somewhere. For it to have started acting up all of a sudden..

I had an issue coming home yesterday, no power and juddering at low rpm's...

Replaced the fuel filter today, but upon checking under the engine lid, I was greeted by a wobbly carb, only being held in place by the air filter! :rofl

Both bolts worked loose, no idea how it got us home really!

Michelle,
Answer Serran1955.
He is THE expert on these things.
Im presuming you have the standard hall sensor set up. couple of electrical boxes behind THE coil? As always pic of engine bay would be good.

:-)

Do you have a tuning company close by that maybe able to have a quick look at the carb for you? I just had my mixture & timing checked and adjusted for £20.00 & I highly recommend it (my timing was slightly advanced). Of course everywhere is priced differently and I'm lucky enough to have a few local to pick from - have a quick look on-line and give them a call with your issue to see if they can advise & at what price. :ok

How did you check for the air leaks?

I had exactly the same problems a couple of weeks ago, van was fine to start with, filled up at Shell in Exeter, then suddenly cutting out and juddering on acceleration - a complete pig and getting worse, to the point where I booked it in to get it sorted.

But then filled up with a tank of petrol from Sainsburys as my folks were down for the weekend before I was going to drop it in, and it was immediately better, and has got better again with the next tank this week - so no idea what was up with the Shell petrol (water in the fuel possibly?), but it might be worth dropping in a tank of Super from another source if you've not tried it already and see if that makes a difference. Cancelled the garage, runs great again now, all for the right price too :)

HTH,
Cheers,
Ben.
