Gearbox code confusion

A fellow SA owner has two gearboxes, both on 2.5i SA buses, both 5 speed and both carrying a code of AVW. Now the confusion. The Brickyard gearbox code shows the AVW as being a four speed from a 1.6 Aircooled! Is anyone aware of the code being used on two different spec boxes?

Looks like the brickyard have it wrong. 1600 Aircooled would have a two digit gearbox code.
AVW is a 2.5ltr 5 speed box fitted from 1990.

Thanks for that Bigherb. Sounds far more plausible.
You wouldn't happen to know what ratios were used in it would you?

1st 4.11
2nd 2.333
3rd 1.48
4th 1.023
5th 0.816
Rev 3.666
Diff 4.833
Which is 14.90 mph in 4th per 1000 rpm and 18.54 mph in 5th on standard tyres.

Thanks BigHerb, You have restored my sanity.
Is there a public source for this info, or is it from your secret files?
Thanks again for your help.

You can download the SA manuals from VW erwin for a daily subscription.
https://erwin.volkswagen.com/erwin/show ... D.ASTPVWE1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Under individual vehicle information.
Note VW call it by it's proper name Type 25 not T3
