Hi, my dg has failed in spectacular fashion.
Not gonna bother trying to fix, so looking for a replacement.
New or refurb by someone reputable.
Seen heritage and thevwspareshop on the bay of fleas...

Anyone suggest another source?

We are having difficulty with the recon (CT 1600) we bought some months ago.

The engine has a fault but as it came from across the country, getting it sorted is proving difficult.

So if poss, I would use someone close enough to send someone out if there is a snag.

Apart from trying to get a refund on the credit card we have to decide what approach to take next.

I have a engine from "the engine shop" and havent had a problem with it in the last 2 years since its been fitted . My local T25 freindly garage got it at cost price for me to

Got three elite engines. Nothing to report. BUT please expect maintenance and lots of it....even reconditioned they need love and care!

No was gonna move to t4 but couldn't help myself, Back to 2wd but still got the t25 bug.

Had an Elite recon in mine for two years now. No problems at all and use it daily.

It's the route I'm going to go down when my DG finally blows up. GTI out of a Mk3 Golf (whole car is about £500) plus conversion parts (bell-housing, new mounting points) for £250 ish, plus labour and probably a stainless exhaust and it probably comes in comparable to fitting a recon.

Pros: speed, fuel economy, easier to source parts
Cons: insurance increase, tools & skills needed

Which is why Engine Shop give a 12 month or 12,000 mile guarantee on every engine they sell since customer satisfaction is their highest priority.

Whoever you buy a re-con engine from, you are taking a risk. My mate, an experienced and thorough VW mechanic, has had lots of trouble with both elite and vege engines in the past, but reckons Engine Shop ones are better quality re-builds. Since he always strips any recon engine down first to check tolerances and check out all is well before he fits it to the vehicle, I would be guided by him.
At the end of the day, you pays your money and you makes your choice.
