Late/ Early cooling systems

Hello all.

I've got an 83 Westy with the DG engine. The motor is a bit tired, so I've sourced a 1990 panel van conversion for spares. It has the later DG engine with the revised cooling system.

I don't fancy fitting all the extra pipes and stuff in my van, so I was wondering if I could fit the early cooling system to the late engine? It looks like only the water pump is different.

Thanks,
Gary

Early to late and vise versa,,,,

Gary , I may be able to help with an answer to your question .

I have fitted 2 water pumps in the last month, first had the early set up (thermostat hanging off the water pump, front left) and the second with the stat housing sited at the left rear, bolted to the cylinder head.
I would have to agree that using the origional system/pipe work/water pump would be the simplest way to get round your dilemma .

If you take this route and decide to use a new water pump with the old system, check the pulley mounting flange , as the one I was given to fit needed the pulley to be spaced away from the pump casing.

Cheers Fritz!

Good to hear from someone who has been there. I'll put a new pump on, so thanks for the pulley tip.

the cooling sys is interchangeable, i run a late engine with an early water sys, and so do many others, its all swappable, as is the zorst sys.

you do need the right bits tho, its total interchabge, all or nothing, if you see what i mean
