Hello all,
Any tips on how to remove the rear hub nuts (46mm ones)
I,ve bought the socket, had a three foot lever on, on which I've bounced 15 stone but it wont budge. Is there a left hand thread on one of the nuts? It doesn't say so in the Haynes manual. Any advice would be much appreciated

Hi Sindew

I had to go through the removal of said hub nuts on my van back in august

i used a 5ft scaffold pole (Pudlock) over the top of my breaker bar. with someone holding the socket on the nut you can get the wieght of 2 men on the pudlock

Hope this helps

i did this in june and yes its a real effort.
i purchased a empi impact spanner. it cost me £10 and made the job easy, took my time, plenty of wd40, just a few hits at a time with a club hammer. be patient and it will come off, bbtoys can supply part

Had another go today, longer bar and gave it a good lump hammering also got the blow lamp on it but it refuses to move.
Will look into the empi impact spanner thing and may buy two new nuts in case I have to chisel them off.

There is definately no left hand threads is there????

NO! NO! NO! both right hand threads, as everyone else has said just a long pole and plenty of muscle.I've taken these off on two vans and both times all thats required is the method suggested, i used a 1" drive socket and breaker bar with the obligatory 5' pole.

i wanted to say this, but didnt in the end.... hehehe stanger things have happened!

They ARE tight, i once jacked the van up and used the wieght of the van to help on one wreck i broke a few years ago, found it easier to undo them before taking the roadwheels off as well, just to make things safer......

Just to let you know I got them off. Yes I had taken the split pins out. I'm not quite senile yet. The offside one came off pretty easy but the other I had to drill and chisel off. JK sent the new nuts £3. each so not worth risking breaking your socket/bar for really.
Thanks for all tips.

Good result, though those bearings can take a hammering when whacking
arond that nut.

Wiki link to Vlad the Impaler is here:-

Nut should be changed anyway, VW say

A pudlok is a short scaff bar with one end flattened.

3/4" T-bar and socket is the answer with a scaff bar, won't break that, though I like the EMPI tool best, never fails !

OLD_ONE - follow the link above... its in the Wiki, a point I was trying to make (Vlad the Impaler - a wicked tool)

No Mocki, you,Martin and Jake I think ( good few horsepower between you) damaged my 1/2" powerbar, not the 3/4" T-bar which was a bargain at GSF, about £15 and most 46mm sockets are 3/4" drive anyway

Either that or Martin did it on his tod
