We have a mechanic around who has removed the rocker shaft assembly and replaced 1 tappet. Is there an initial setting when the rocker shaft is refitted?
Thanks!

If would be good if you could add the details of what engine you have, i.e 1.9 Dg petrol 4/5 speed, etc to your profile so that people can help you. I'm sure somebody will be able to give you some pointers

If its a hydraulic tappet it's two turns once the slack is taken up. Some people swear that 1.5 turns is better. But if you do that make sure they are all the same.

It seems that since the rocker shaft has been removed some of the hydraulic tappets have lost there compression. One of them especially will not adjust to well. The mechanic has suggested that we now get another 3 sprung loaded push rod tubes and see if that helps. If that makes sense

... and give slightly more informative post titles (unless the idea is to intrigue everyone into looking at the mysterious contents).

This is the current situation with my tappets since the Rocker cover has been taken off and the tappet at the end will not adjust

Did you fill the tappet with oil and bleed it before installing? The procedure is all detailed in the manuals, which are really worth getting if you don't have them - saves a lot of guesswork.
By the way, are you still trying to stop the engine smoking, as per your earlier posts, or is this something different?

James the engine smoke has stopped since we replaced the pushrod, pushrod tube and tappet on cylinder 1 as after some investigation the pushrod fell and had been sheered at the top. However since they took the rocker cover off and replaced these one of the tappets will not go back. The mechanic had suggested we replace the tubes with the telescopic tubes and hope the tappets bleed

Sounds like your man has probably not got the pushrod to sit in the cup on the tappet. Little screwdriver down the tube under the pushrod and help it into the cup whilst refitting the rocker shaft. Telescopic pushrod tubes are expensive, and almost certainly not required on this job (yet), as there's probably nothing wrong with any of the tappets, just unfamiliarity with the engine type?
Earlier advice on initial preload setting is good, on advice of several very experienced VW mechanics I do 1.5 turns in from just touching, VW officially say 2 but that can sometimes seem a tad too much.

				Hello,
^^^^^
Sounds familiar..
Here is a photo from 'Ooops' where you can just see the pushrod centered on the hydraulic tappet..
Hope this helps..

Thanks for your feedback. I am really out of my depth and trying to take it all in. The mechanics are old school and one of them has done some work on vw's mainly on a Aircooled but not the water cooled. He said to me once you take out the pushrod out its almost impossible to get them back unless you have the telescopic tube.As i mentioned earlier one of the pushrods had sheered and needed replacing and the tappet as more of a precaution. However know there is no compression in number 2 cylinder and the tappet is not going back. Wold it be possible to call you at somepoint all the help wold be greatly appreciated
