Which way to go?............

So, the question is if swapping from a 2.1 DJ, what do we go for a 8v GTI or TDI. What sort of MPG comparisons are we getting? I know this would get replies in the engine upgrades forum but would like some input from Syncro owners.

I went from 2.1 to etdi. It probably has somewhere around 120bhp and a load of torque. Over 7000 kilometres I have averaged a very honest 30.03mpg.
I considered all of the other obvious conversions and the TDi suited our need more. I do love the sound of a 2.5 scooby but the mpg is isn't good and we don't have room for LPG.
The reason I didn't choose the 8v golf is because you need so many diesel parts that you may aswell go the whole hog.

I have a 2.1 Dj Doka that has very little extra weight.
I have a Westy with a 1.9 afn tdi that is a fat girl and heavy as hell.
The Westy S**ts all over the Doka in speed, MPG, overtaking up hill from 50-70mph etc etc... If I lived outside the LEZ the Doka would have an AFN and that would make it quite an amazing thing to drive

Easiest will probably be 1z as you don't have to intercool it. Using JX engine bars and mounts will be the most straight forward.

Well if it was me I'd go for a a pre 96 2l Subaru lump and LPG. The older Subaru engines didn't have the floating liner, so head gaskets don't cook every 5 minutes.
My 1Z Tdi drives nicely, and has plenty of torque, but I have killed one gearbox already. According to Aiden he has a queue TDi conversions needing gearbox repairs.
Syncro gearbox parts seem to be getting scarce.
Just my 2p's worth

Cheers Rich, theres one major drawback with the Scooby + LPG. Check out the availability og LPG or GPL as its known in Spain. If GPL was more available, i'd stick with the 2.1 or go 2ltr GTI. As it is my 2.1 DJ is running fine at the moment so im only putting feelers out at the moment and if the parts pop up at sensible prices I might start to collect them. Also if I did goe diesel, i'd probably use the bus more as its 10c a ltr cheaper than petrol here.
If the 1z's are killing boxes then what are the more powerful TDI's going to do?
Maybe ill get a bongo...
Maybe not.

Of course theres always the AAZ route. I was allways happy with my AAZ crewcab. Im not bothered about huge amounts of power or top speed. Just something reliable and economical.

Are these old boxes that are being repaired or previously rebuilt boxes? When I spoke to Aiden a couple of years ago about this, at that time he hadn't had any issues with the boxes he had built for TDi's.
A lot of people that have TDi conversions have longer gears fitted or at least oiling platesfor extra lubrication.

there's no queue of TDi boxes to repair, the scarcity of parts is true enough but there's no inherant issue with TDi on the 094 box when built to suit, driven with some revs rather than all out torque, plenty of them out there ok, but all our boxes need regular oil changes and care when driving, a good VC, and catch them before they go bang.
PD is a bit of an animal, expensive to do right and maybe pushing the box to it's limit, as do the the twin turbo scoobies
