You need a 4-speed gear lever for a syncro. Jam a fire poker in the broken stub, it'll keep you moving until you find a lever. They can be welded ok if it's done properly.

This may help when you find someone who can weld, but it's for the 5-speed (different end, no fork or plunger on yours) https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... gear+lever" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Good luck!

I fixed mine by taping both bits,then screwing some studing into the bottom bit,then screw the long bit onto the studing!

Snap no pun intended, welded after studing fitted. 2 years ago.

Yes they are obtainable but £200 seems a bit costly.
I cant wait or afford a new one right now at 200 GBP so have fixed the old one by cutting down an 8mm hex house radiator key that fits perfectly in the hollow ends with only very slight filing of the hex corners and then fitting it in one broken gear stick end to half its length about 4cm (with JB Weld then inserting it in the other broken end the rest of the way . To hold it in place I used some J-B weld on the hex metal and inside the hollow stem and the gearstick is as good as new and solid where it counts and if not better than new
as the dynamic stress on the weak point (I think caused partially by the grub screw that retains the spring retaining collet from which the crack propagated) is now reinforced inside with 8mm hex bar.for a cost of 20 pence.
It seems no one has the 5 speed stick so it might be worth getting them made but at a reasonable cost as the hollow ones seem prone to to breaking. Any way above is my solution to fix the gear stick and I didnt have to take it out of the VW.
This type of fix is good to know when stuck on your travells and I always carry tubes of JB-Weld as its rated to 3000psi and will witstand temperatures up to 550 celcius so will get you out of a lot of situations where no workshop is available.

Any one want a chat we are again at the well travelled section at Vanfest.

regards to all those that replied

Syncro uses the 4 speed stick not the 5.

We have both made with solid shafts to try and stop this happening.

Kevin, drop us a mail if you need a stick, we owe you a favour. If your stuck I'll happily send you one out Europe wide if needs be.

I'm not in for a while but I'll make them aware of this thread back at base.
