[Non-VW] VW wheels on a Toyota

Apologies for not really being a VW question, but I hope some of the experts here might be able to offer advice...
I've recently acquired a "shed" Toyota Corolla (1991) that I intend to use as a daily driver, with the only requirement being that everything be as cheap as possible. (and I mean cheap, the car cost €200)
The tyres are somewhat tired, to say the least.
Options:
€€€ Fit new tyres, not the end of the world, but still. €250
€€ I have a load of good Skoda/VW rims & tyres, same size, swap the tyres onto the toyota rims, about €50
€ Fit the Skoda/VW rims to the toy (PCD and offset are same), buy a set of rings from ebay to adapt the centre bore €10
So, my question is, is this doable? I know plenty of people do it with alloy wheels on cars that will be driven much harder and faster than mine, but I'm looking at fitting steel wheels using rings, opinions?
