the mechanic said something to do with it can cause more oil to be pushed out of the seals so they remove them

does that sound right ?

Read oops post 20th July..

If you don't have these fitted correctly.. there is nothing much holding the pushrod tubes in place.. so risk of leaks.. :(

People invent all sorts of great excuses for not refitting these.. mostly because they are fiddly..

Have fun...

thank you for your reply though it fills me with dread !

has the mechanic and not one I have used before potentially caused a massive problem with the engine ? if not now but in the future ?

Take it back and tell em you want them re fitted. I'd take sarrans picture along in case they can't remember how they fit!

I'm going to call them tomorrow but would like to hear from the masses first...

If they have been fitted correctly which I would assume they have been after all the mechanic has been working on Aircooled vehicles for over 40yrs so should know his stuff, if this is the case and all work has been carried out correctly should they be okay without the springs fitted ?

I can see how this will end with the garage not good...

Does anyone else leave them out ?

If the spring is not put back in what are the consequences ?
I shall speak to chris cross motors tomorrow but need to have information as to why I want them put back. No doubt they will tell me it's okay for them not to be fitted !

Is there anyone on this site that leaves them off ?

Really peed off with the situation can I speak to trading standards as job not really done I know when I phone them they will baffle me and say its okay not to have them etc...

Really don't need this hassle

Time to learn to work on your own engine methinks :? Don't pay monkeys to bugger about with things they don't understand.

They ought to understand how the engine works he has been working on Aircooled engines for over 40 yrs !

Anyways saying how bad they are is not productive I really need to know can damage be caused without the springs etc?

The pushrod tubes have an in-built tension in that they are compacted as the head is tightened down as they harden off though I assume they can shorten thus Herr VW added the retaining springs .... they aren't fitted to the watercooled engines and they don't seem to shorten ??

No. Leaving the spring off will probably mean your engine will drip a small amount of oil from the push-rod seals at some point in the future. The rocker cover gaskets will leak more oil than this anyway  It's all part of the joy of owning an air-cooled engine. Check you oil level every week, fix the leaks every six months :D

thank you BOXY

on that note I think I will leave an argument with the garage (really dont need the stress at the mo) but will call them tomorrow to ask exactly the reason as to why they didn't put back...

any other schools of thought ?

Sarran refitted this part myself on cylinder head work. Can you clarify does the rocker pedestal bolt down on to it or is it trapped outside of the pedestal.

Phoned the garage and got shouted at ! Telling me I don't need them trust him, mine are bent etc

ended him saying bring it in and he'll fit them if it makes me happy !

Really am shocked at how a business can talk to customers that way !

Not sure if I want to go back after that..would you ? Hes only going to do it begrudgingly or not properly !

Dilemma now as what to do...

To be honest I wouldn't go back after being shouted at. You may not need them as the tubes are in pretty firmly when cold but to be on the safe side I'd put them back in myself. Shouldn't take more than half hour for both sides even If you've got two left hands like myself. You will need a torque socket spanner though. Just loosen the rockers, no need to remove them.
