Near side front wheel center there's a dust cover on the bearing.the cable runs from the back of the speedo down an out the body and through the middle of the front hub bearing.it sticks out through the dust cap and a clip holds it in place so as the wheel turns it turns the cable. See if it has come adrift .if you look at the inside of the hub you can see the outer sleeve going in to it matey

Cheers buddy,
I'm buggered here, we're camped in a wood! No way i'm attempting a jack on this ground.
Looks like a job at the weekend, no way I can speed in this anyway!

And/or yank the dash gauge cover off and disconnect the speedo cable where it enters the back of the speedo gauge.
Go for a drive and see if the end of the cable spins round - if it is spinning round then the speedo gauge itself may be broken.

Easy enough to check if it's come adrift without jacking the van up.
As mentioned....look at the grease cap and if the cable isn't in view it "may" have lost the circlip and may just need shoving back through the opening and a piece of thin wire wrapping round it to hold it in place.
If the cable end is still visible check at the speedo end to see if it's connected properly....re-connect if not but if it is connected properly the cable has snapped.
To check remove it from the back of the speedo and go for a short drive,as mentioned above,to see if it's spinning.
If the speedo has been "jumping" recently there's also a chance it's worn the opening round rather than being square.

had a long roam around Cheshire yesterday for work (the main reason we went), kept getting intermittent jumping but not the right speed so i think that narrows out a broken cable.
i'm going to have a look Sunday morning (first free time) before a trip through to Dub Odyssey. thanks for all the advice to date guys, if i need a new grease cap i got the link cheers Cruz.
if i need a circlip, what size do ineed to9 ask for/ never bought one in my life, i'm guessing car spares shop?

***UPDATE****
sorted. as suggested, the circlip had gone, the squear hole is still pretty square so fiddled around for a while, got it back through the hole, secured in place with a bent paperclip until i can get a clip. had a run last night, all working fine now, bit of needle jump but nowt to fret about!
cheers guys
