Got under the van this eve and had a good look at where the oil leak could be (yes theres a slight leak, nothing major) there is no tinware covering the pushrods so on the right hand side the first pushrod (closest to the bumper) felt loose I gave it a move and then it became loose ! looks like the seal has been pushed in



now I'm aware i am probably the cause of that (idiot I am ) it obviously cant be driven (to far ) before it starts weeing oil so I guessing 2 miles to the garage should be okay...now what am I looking at cost parts etc ....or is it worth replacing all 4 on that side does the engine need to come out etc

hit me with the worst/ best case scenario

just to add looked at the cost of the covers which are not massive in cost from VW heritage its going to be the labour...

Aircooled it's easy ... do a search and there's loads on changing/re-sealing one. On a watercooled it involves the use of a telescopic tube or taking the head off

Booked in for tomorrow £100 all in to replace all the pushrod seals and I supply the oil.

yep I know the seals are no more than a few pounds but I cant do them !
I guess thats the nature of the business if it was the gas boiler that needed seals or something we'd pay it cos we don't know how to (unless you're a gas engineer !)

what price would be reasonable to pay to have this job done ? I'm having it done regardless as I cant use the van !

I phoned another garage and they wanted £150 !

Dosen't sound too bad to me, if you can't do it yourself then you don't have much choice.

Agreed.

Sadly to run one of these vehicles properly (and safely) you either need money or the ability to carry out basic tasks and servicing yourself. My advice would be to buy a Haynes manual and read the wiki here and maybe try to find someone local to you who will perhaps mentor you untill you learn to do it yourself.
