1.6 diesel starter motor repair/replacement

My starter on my 1.6 diesel went kaput a few weeks ago. On opening it found one of the brushes had come off and been ground up along with the brass holder. I couldn't get a starter nor the replacement parts so rebuilt it using a brush holder from a diesel golf which I got scrap. It still works, but the brushes are considerably smaller and the whole thing runs slower making starting a bit hit and miss whereas before it just turned straight into life!

Does anyone know where the brass brush holders can be purchased? I'm in Kenya so would prefer to ship a few grams over a few kilos for a new starter!

I'm in Kenya, I can get a starter, probably, maybe or there again they might get me the wrong one. Or I can get it shipped to me.
I believe that all diesel starters will fit all diesel engines. However, some of the suppliers give a different model for early and later models. Which is true?

Can anyone recommend a good cheap source for a strong starter. I see Brickwerks starters are around 120 quid... but on ebay they appear to be about half that new. Justkampers requires returning the old one which is out of the question. Anybody got one recently? Any suggestions keeping in mind budget?

Thanks in Advance,

Dubwana.

Not entirely sure where it is, but you are welcome to it!!

Its chuffing heavy though....and I don't know whether it works or not....but I know someone who might be able to take it to bits for me....and maybe send you what you need? Got any pics of the inside of yours??

New here - 11 euro, check it is the right one http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kohlebursten-Koh ... 2301aec8ca
Just checked the postage to Kenya - 32 yoyos!!!!!!

A page of them here http://stores.ebay.de/Trio-Motors-IU/Br ... 2603293010 but you will have to go through them all to see if yours is there! (or ask them!)

Have you got any readable numbers on your starter?

Can you match any of these numbers up? - or their equivalent on yours?

Thanks for the helpful replies.

Em, can I hold off for a moment before I ask you to demolish the one you have somewhere to see if I can get a new piece. However if you do come across your diesel starter the model is 001 317 011 # 012.

If its the same... please let me know.

Thanks

Many apologies for not getting back with a proper "Thank You" for your assistance and offers. In the end we managed to get the brush holder from a company in England. It turns out that some ebay dealers had it, but hadn't advertised it. So if you email them they will add it onto their advertising. Then I got it sent to my brother, he sent it one courtesy of the post office and it arrived in just over a week...

Thanks again for your help, I just ran into a really busy period after posting, but the ebay suggestion worked great, key is, ask them, they have it hidden away somewhere.
