Heart transplant

Hi guys. I posted a thread at the start of the year titled heart transplant so time for an update. I had a 2l CU air cooled in a 1981 Viking conversion. I then had a 1.9TD AAZ fitted. I did most of the work myself but Mario over in Telford supplied and fitted the engine. The other part's all came from a second van that I bought off E bay for £600. I have started selling off all the other spares from the van and will get back over half of what it cost me so well chuffed. Originally I did not want to cut the front lower grill out so I could keep the air cooled look. We then found the radiator running at 97 degrees so the rad was heating the engine not cooling it so I had to cut the grill out. Got the south African wrap around grill which I think looks pretty smart but obviously not air cooled. Running around at about 32 mpg and can sit at 70 mph on motorway but it does get noisy so 60/65 seems more comfortable. I use the van every day so the extra MPG help.
I was talking to a mechanic from WV background the other day and he was telling me that the AAZ has always had a heating problem and they always fit oil coolers to the their vans to stop them cooking there engine's. I have never heard this before! Is this something you guys have heard off or is he just trying to talk me into a £500 job?

AAZ do tend to run it hot it seems and being at the back in a T3 doesn't help
Plenty of peeps don't cool them, some do, and more
Plenty of them don't seem to last long but then they are old engines now
Plenty of them run around perfectly happily, depends a bit on how you use and maintain them, daily driver regular oil changes should be best way to go

I hardly think oil cooling = 500 notes :?: just run it as a 60mph van

If it only runs hot when motorway cruising then you could fit an oil cooler with an adapter where the oil filter spins on and put the oil rad where it will get wind blowing through it at speed, I think the kits are about £150 on fleabay. Its a T25, whats another 150 for peace of mind

Aidan giving diesel advice what's the world coming too! mine is rock solid at speed rad fans kick in at rest on a hot day, about normal, it has been rebuilt but behaved no differently before.

Since I fitted an 80 degree stat to my AAZ it never gets warm enough!
