hi. the cheapo black webbing straps folding buke racks. are they up to the job? anyone had a bike fall off at 55 mph? can you chain your bikes to them or best to take bikes off and chain to railings? mucho thanks.

Post a link. I use webbing straps to help hold my bikes down on a metal rack but I'm guessing you may be talking of racks made out of webbing.

One other thing, the red Halfords webbing straps found in the bike racks area are useless for keeping permanently on the rack. I tried them once and they disintegrated after just a few months of British summer weather (sun mixed with rain) .

I had one i used on my Astra with 3 bikes on it, tended to slide a little and had to keep stopping on long journeys to keep tightening up the straps. Maybe a bit more secure on a van because the rear end isn't as sloped.
