Van overheating...

I've had a problem with my engine overheating over the last couple of days, it's a JX. The first time it happened I checked the water level and it had got very low indeed so I topped it up again but the van is still running hot at low speeds yet seems to be cooling fine on the motorway etc. It hasn't used any more water but I have noticed air bubbles in the reservoir when I've checked the levels while the engine was hot.

I'm thinking by letting it get so low on water I may have allowed air to get into the system and cause an airlock? Does that sound likely?

Any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

Top it up properly, bleed it properly (as per the wiki instructions) find out where the leak is and rectify it. Running one of these vans out of/low on coolant is a recipe for £1,000+ worth of disaster.

Can't help further as I don't 'do' diesels.
