if you look on the handbrake lever, there is a little switch that when the handbrake is released makes contact and turns the light off on the dash. check what it makes contact with hasn't been bent out the way. Also operate (push) the switch with your finger see if the light on the dash goes out

According to my handbook:
"If the lamp does not go out when the engine is running and the handbrake is released, or comes on when driving, it could mean that one of the two brake circuits has failed."

Well no little switch on hand break, just took top of dash off and found wire which runs from back red light down to hand break which is a loose wire, fiddled with it and red light went out! should this wire be connected to hand break!? maybe a trip to the garage tom will be a good idea? strange that the light has only ever come on today. Thanks for your help, sure that i will have another drama soon

yes it should be connected to something, i would take a pic of mine, but it's not here at the moment.
from memory.... have a look at the handbrake, you will see a little welded on 'tab' (you might have to remove the plastic cover)when the handbrake is taken off this tab touches a button/switch

thankyou, i will be out in the morn to find the tab. attempting to get kiddies into bed could be some time! The deeper im looking in the van the more wires im finding, ekkk!
