Ok say my engine 1.6td jx does 30mph in 5th gear at 2000 rpm.
If I were to convert to another engine would it do the same rpm at the same speed??

Im thinking it'll be the same as the gearing will alter rpm/ speed.
the only difference would be engine power being at different points at the rev range making it more drivable eg petrol engines being more revvey and Hence higher top speed.

Please someone answer cost I'm doubting my sanity now!!

One revolution of the crankshaft will carry you the same distance, at the same speed, whether it is a JX, V8 or rubber band providing the propulsion.

As you suggest, the comfortable period of the power curve will be at different rpm ranges for different engine types.

As to doubting your sanity, you confirmed that you had lost that when you first bought the vehicle.

that's what I thought. Hence why people say the 2.0l gti engines are more suited to the t25 gearing.
just need more spare time and money now ,
