hi folks
ok done a AAZ 19 td conversion on my 1990 1700,5-speed panel van. all seemed rosey, went to vanfest ok around town ok, THEN out on sunday seemed like the throttle got jammed on full ,black smoke pouring out the exhaust , swiched off engine STILL RUNNING, had to stall it on gearbox to get it to stop..been told it is common on this conversion because the engine now lays on its side as opposed to upright as it was designed.is there anything i can do to stop this happening again as it is well scarey, once engine was cold i checked the levels and started it up and drove home ok.

How much oil did you put in? Sounds like you have overfilled it and its running on oil sucked in through the inlet manifold. Drain out the oil and put 4.5 ltrs back in and mark the dipstick level for future reference.

yep sounds like you picked up some engine oil and ran on it , just drop your oil level slightly and slow down going around round abouts :P

Have you got the AAZ or JX cam cover? Think the JX one might help a bit.

Its pulling right hand 'g' force for more than a few seconds that does it, and its either oil in the inlet elbow at the low point being sucked in OR the turbo gland seals letting it past, as the sump level temporarily becomes higher than the turbo bearings themselves combined with oil surge within the sump and return feed pipe.

The last one seems most likley...

Be careful half way a round roundabout if going off on the 270 degree exit, cover the brake if you are close behind others, those behind you will never get within 100 yards again if it happens, grey smoke and intense detonation.

Don't put the clutch in, don't knock it into neutral, leave in a high gear and apply foot brake... else, bye-bye engine!

It almost certainly 'will' happen again sometime, usually after a long fast run, then a tight exctended right-hander - re-program yourself for that situation... they are strong but it obviously does harm.

JX and AAZ cam covers aren't interchangeable.
The shape is different and you woul dhave to drill and tap the head 8 times to fit the studs to hold it down.

Funny that, my original AAZ head is as described, but theis new VEGE refurb one I have is pre-drilled and tapped for that JX style camcover.. should that make me suspicious
