Blow/suck in the small tube, there should be resistance one way or the other if its equal then it's fubarred

If you can suck and blow through it then it needs replacing.You should only be able to blow through it.

There should be resistance in both directions, if in even the slightest doubt replace it with this ..

Yeh, I read that this commonly quoted blow / suck / quacking noise thing can be misleading. iirc it was Simon (Brickwerks) that said summat like that many designs of the cap don't do the correct "one way thing" until they are screwed down in place, Summat to do with the way the one way valvey flappy thing is constructed. As Ian says, if in doubt, replace it with one from Brickwerks or the main dealers only. A stuck shut cap can wreck your engine ( ask me how I know = 10 years ago it happened to me

)

You CAN blow through the caps and they make a "toot" sound, or quack for those that have strange hearing
Brickwerks also sell caps by Blau for 1/3 the price of the genuine ones
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/h ... arket.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There has been quite a lot of talk about these caps on various internet forums, the low down was that there were a lot of cheap caps out there that were causing problems and the best advise was to stick to genuine VW caps as they were the most reliable.
We've used these for a while, they come from exactly the same production as the genuine VW marked caps, and have exactly the same internals. When they have been available we have been happy to sell them, and fit them as an alternative to the genuine part.
We now have a reliable supply and can buy in larger quantities, so theyre a little cheaper now too!
We still stock the genuine VW marked caps too, but we know these are as good as the originals, and at a better price.
If you blow through the spout they make the same "quack" noise too !

We need a ‘definitive’ people – J
Senor Hulley – There should be resistance in both directions….
Senor Rob - If you can suck and blow through it then it needs replacing. You should only be able to blow through it…..
Senor Cruz - You CAN blow through the caps and they make a "toot" sound……
Senor Ghost - this commonly quoted blow / suck / quacking noise thing can be misleading……….

I stand by my quote

I have a brand new one from brickwerks in my hand.Blowing through it makes a parping sound.Sucking air through it is not possible.The one on the van works in exactly the same way.

I said the same. I have a new coolant tank and the 'blau' cap that came with it here and I can blow ("parp" sound) when fitted and when not fitted to the bottle but cannot suck with the cap fitted to the bottle and with the cap not fitted to the bottle
