hi all,

our van with a 1900 df engine and standard solex 5 carb runs fantastic but i noticed sunday following our trip out last weekend.

On slowing down from say 50 to 20 mph to a stop we get get a small back fire from the engine, sounds like little popping noise 4 or 5 times
no noise on tick over or acceleration ,recently changed the float valve and carb checked over .

Any idears and how to tackle it,

Air leak into the exhaust, probably.

back fire is also a classic air leak into the inlet side, or weak mixture due to a blocked idle jet

back firing comes up a lot on here... seems quite common, mine did it all the time and I lived with it ... but Ive got the engine out at the mo fixing the water pump so perfect time to sort everything out.

I had several snapped exhaust studs causing it to blow badly, I also had cracked and split vacuum pipes so as Adrain and Kev have said both of these can cause this, I am hoping that once refitted I will have a perfectly quite engine on over run .
