The Royal Geographical Society does some 2 day off-road courses sponsored by Landrover - I don't know whether there are any criteria for taking part or whether it's open to any and all, but looks pretty good:

E D I T: It looks as if the course is only open to RGS members.

Is it Gaydon or Banbury that do them, I remember doing the course it was the land rover experience and by all means a really good day out and surprising how good they are off road

Did one at Silverstone a few years back, massive adreniline rush considering the speed! Don't know if they still do them or if they still use Landys! Would recommend it if they do.

I would like to have a proper go in one as I have always admired the Defenders. I did rent one with some mates and it had a Toyota engine fitted when I was in Australia but that was years ago and I cant really remember because I was pissed most of the time

Also, check with the AA. They probably don't go everywhere

If you want to drive to the desert buy a Landrover.
If you want to come back buy a Toyota.
Sorry couldn't resist.

I've been to Eastnor castle for a official LR night driving experience. I went with a group from work and we had Defenders, Range Rovers and Disco's to try. Highly recommended. The chaps were all great too.
Some of my more useless off roading colleagues couldn't quite grasp where the wheels were pointing in the deep ruts and our convoy suffered 3 punctures in quick succession. Every time a tyre went though, they replaced the vehicle with brand new (at the time) Range Rovers with less than 100 miles on the clock. Pretty nervous trying not to break or scratch shiny new 80k Range Rovers, just when all the light disappeared and we entered the wooded section.....suddenly they felt rather wide!
I had brilliant fun, but would rather have done the whole event in my Syncro
