Mine is getting a bit saggy and wobbly. Any 'clean' suggestions for getting it nice and rigid instead of floppy? :rofl

Just try tightening the screw from the inside! :D
Might do the trick.

Ohh, dunno about them grommets, a worn out bush maybe your problem!
I just screwed mine from behind, with slight pressure, til it went firm again.
Didn't use a rubber!!

The bush might be worn from over use!!

I might see if I can screw it from the rear and see if it gets tighter.

I thought that plastic insert/grommet might wear with constant use and might have been the cause of the floppy handle? I cant see any handle bushes for sale

if its the early long arm fit the plastic bush from the later arm it takes all the slop out of the system

It is an early one. So I get the later bush as opposed the correct one for the year? I get an 85> as opposed to an 81 one?

yes you will need to file the hole in the door a couple of mm bigger as later vans the hole is slightly larger and touch up the paintwork to stop rust i have 2 vans and done this on both of them

That's what I did with mine when it went wobbly, but perhaps your fitting is different.

Sounds a bit drastic. Wouldn't the right bush for the right year take out the slack? I am assuming worn bush, but might try the screw in the rear suggestion first.

its not drastic , it cant be seen if done properly the later sliding door handle seal fitted better and was plastic not foam so replacing the seal for the later one improves how the handle fits , yes tightening the screw helps but it does not make is as good as the later handle
